Each year more people die by suicide than in road traffic accidents.
Each year more than 700,000 people sadly choose to end their lives by suicide and many, many more attempt to do so. Added to these terrible statistics there are many more who suffer alone in silence with the thoughts of suicide that can plague their entire life.
A recent study by the wonderful Charity the Samaritans showed that over 50% of those who do end their life choose not to engage with 'professional' health services - they choose instead to suffer in silence and alone. Our primary purpose is to reduce the stigma of suicide and encourage people in crisis who are contemplating suicide to come forward and to chat about their fears. Surely this more 'informal' approach needs to be encouraged. We aim to do this.
The individual who created this project passionately believes in reaching out and 'chatting' about the fears and pressures of modern day life. Our founder has a long history of attempting suicide and having permanently lost the use of his hand through the most serious of these attempts yearns to now relate his own experiences to encourage those in need to chat and to see, please God, a positive way forward in life.
We exist to play a positive role in reaching out to the entire community by raising awareness and encouraging people to seek the help which is already out there. We do not seek to replicate any service - we seek to encourage those in need to reach out to those services.
Our positive message is one of hope and encouragement.
We intend to inform our listeners through personal testimony and the distribution of literature. Our positive, hopeful message is that it really is okay to not be okay!
The fact is that suicide is preventable - no one should suffer alone or in silence.
